The film is based on a semi-autobiographical novel by John O'Brien. Two weeks after the production of the film had started, O'Brien committed suicide. The movie was just the writer's fantasy. He was basically doing the same thing as the Ben character but the alcohol wasn't working so he shot himself in the head. A halt of the project was considered, but work on the film was continued as a tribute to the author (c'est beau).
Pile: That's the reality of alcoholism I'm afraid, a tragic portrait of a man killing himself and the kind person who tries to ease the pain of his last few days. Great art doesn't need to be plot-driven or have a complex narrative - this film is about examining the reality of the human condition as it asks you to empathize with with two desperate people who use companionship as a form of prayer and a last resort against their pain.
Face: This is the worst movie I have ever seen, because it manages to insult women, men and life--in fact, that's all it is. An insult. It's a masturbatory fantasy for a perverted teenage alcoholic male. Totally unrealistic and stupid. Why not show the alcoholic barfing and wetting the bed, instead of showing the woman sitting on the toilet? This is not an accurate portrayal of alcoholic life or death.
